CEN CQ0224 METAL CENTER TRANSMISSION GEAR SET
The CEN Racing CQ0224 Metal Center Transmission Gear Set is a genuine replacement gear set for compatible Q-Series and MT-Series center transmission assemblies. CEN lists CQ0224 as the metal center transmission gear set in its official Q/M Series parts documentation.

VERIFIED PRODUCT DATA
- Manufacturer: CEN Racing
- Part Number: CQ0224
- Component Type: Metal Center Transmission Gear Set
- Application: Compatible CEN Q-Series and MT-Series center transmissions
- Material: Metal
CENTER TRANSMISSION FUNCTION
The center transmission transfers torque from the primary drive into the front and rear driveline. Any wear, backlash or misalignment in this gear set can affect the entire power path, not just one axle. Because the center gearbox sits upstream of both driveline branches, problems here can present as noise, hesitation, binding or irregular load delivery across the chassis.
GEAR MESH & BACKLASH
Correct gear mesh is critical. Mesh that is too tight increases friction, heat and bearing load; mesh that is too loose concentrates load near the tooth tips and can create chatter, accelerated wear or tooth damage.
After assembly, rotate the center transmission by hand through a full revolution. The gear train should move smoothly with no tight spots, rhythmic binding or abrupt changes in resistance.
SHAFT & BEARING ALIGNMENT
Gear wear is often a symptom of another problem. Before replacing only the gears, inspect center-transmission shafts, bearings, gearbox seating and outdrive alignment. Bearing play or a bent shaft can move the gears out of their intended contact pattern under load.
WEAR PATTERN DIAGNOSIS
- Polishing centered across the tooth face: generally suggests the load is being shared across the intended contact area.
- Wear concentrated near tooth tips: may indicate excessive backlash or shallow engagement.
- Heavy scoring or discoloration: can indicate contamination, friction or poor alignment.
- Repeated damage in one sector: may indicate eccentric rotation, bent shafting or bearing movement.
- Sharp burrs or chipped edges: warrant inspection of the complete transmission before continued operation.
INSTALLATION CHECKLIST
- Confirm the vehicle's parts documentation calls for CQ0224.
- Open and clean the center gearbox before installing the replacement set.
- Inspect all mating gears for chipped or hooked teeth.
- Check bearings for roughness and radial play.
- Inspect shafts for bending, wear or damaged retaining surfaces.
- Seat each gear fully and squarely on its intended shaft/interface.
- Verify correct spacers, shims and washers are returned to their original positions.
- Rotate the transmission by hand before applying power.
- Reinspect noise, heat and backlash after the first operating session.
LUBRICATION & CONTAMINATION
Use the lubrication method specified for the exact CEN gearbox in which CQ0224 is installed. Excess grease is not automatically better: overpacking can add drag, while exposed or poorly sealed lubricant can trap abrasive contamination. Clean gears and a correctly assembled gearbox are essential for long service life.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF CENTER-GEAR PROBLEMS
- High-pitched whine: can indicate overly tight mesh.
- Clicking or rhythmic knocking: can indicate a chipped tooth or eccentric gear rotation.
- Intermittent binding: may point to damaged teeth, debris or misalignment.
- Increasing drivetrain backlash: can indicate tooth wear, shaft wear or bearing play.
- Metal debris in gearbox lubricant: requires immediate inspection before continued use.
RELATED CEN CENTER-TRANSMISSION PARTS
CEN's Q/M Series parts list places CQ0224 within the same center-transmission family as the CQ0219 center transmission gearbox set, CQ0212 main shaft, CQ0213 second gear shaft, CQ0226 center locker and CQ0227 center outdrives. Inspecting these surrounding components during a rebuild helps prevent a new gear set from being damaged by an existing alignment or support problem.
WHAT CEN DOES NOT PUBLISH
CEN identifies CQ0224 as a metal center transmission gear set, but its current product page does not publish the individual internal tooth counts, gear pitch/module, gear diameters, face widths, shaft bores, pressure angles or gear ratio for this set. GASHEAD RC does not invent those specifications.
GASHEAD RC NOTE
When a center transmission starts making noise, replacing the gears alone is not always the complete repair. Check bearings, shafts, gearbox seating, shimming and mating components as one system. Correct alignment and smooth hand rotation before power-up are the best indicators that the rebuild is ready to run.
