CEN GS088 STEEL SPUR GEAR – 39T
The CEN Racing GS088 Steel Spur Gear is a 39-tooth steel transmission gear used in compatible CEN driveline assemblies. CEN's current catalog identifies GS088 as the 39T steel spur gear, and historical CEN/Nemesis documentation confirms the same GS088 part-number assignment.
VERIFIED PRODUCT DATA
- Manufacturer: CEN Racing
- Part Number: GS088
- Component Type: Steel Spur Gear
- Tooth Count: 39T
- Material: Steel
39T VS. 43T
GS088 is the 39-tooth version. CEN separately catalogs GS087 as the 43T steel spur gear. Tooth count affects transmission ratio and gear pairing, so the two should not be assumed interchangeable simply because they share the same general construction.
GEAR MESH & BACKLASH
Correct mesh is critical with steel gears. Too-tight mesh increases friction, heat and bearing load; too-loose mesh reduces tooth engagement and can concentrate load near the tips, increasing chatter and the risk of tooth damage.
After installation, rotate the drivetrain through a full revolution by hand. Resistance should remain consistent with no repeating tight spots or sudden changes in backlash.
MATING-GEAR INSPECTION
A fresh GS088 should not be installed against a badly worn or chipped mating gear. Damaged mating teeth can quickly imprint poor contact into the new spur. Inspect the complete pair, supporting shafts and bearings together.
WEAR PATTERN DIAGNOSIS
- Centered polished contact: generally suggests load is being carried across the intended tooth face.
- Tip-heavy wear: may indicate excessive backlash or shallow engagement.
- Scoring or discoloration: may point to friction, contamination or misalignment.
- Damage repeating in one section: can indicate eccentric mounting, shaft runout or bearing play.
- Chipped edges or burrs: require inspection of the full gear train before continued operation.
INSTALLATION CHECKLIST
- Confirm the transmission calls for CEN GS088 / 39T.
- Inspect the mating pinion and adjacent gears for damage.
- Check supporting bearings and shafts for play or roughness.
- Seat the spur gear squarely on its intended hub/interface.
- Set backlash so the gears rotate freely without excessive looseness.
- Rotate the drivetrain by hand through a complete revolution.
- Verify retaining hardware is fully secure.
- Reinspect contact pattern and noise after the first operating session.
NOISE AS A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
A high-pitched whine can indicate overly tight mesh, while clicking or rhythmic knocking may indicate a damaged tooth, excessive backlash or eccentric rotation. New transmission noise after service should be investigated before continued use.
LUBRICATION & CLEANLINESS
Follow the lubrication method specified for the exact transmission. Avoid assuming more grease is always better: exposed lubricant can trap abrasive debris, while overpacked enclosed gearboxes can add unnecessary drag. Correct mesh, clean components and sound bearings are more important than excessive lubricant.
WHAT CEN DOES NOT PUBLISH
CEN confirms GS088 as a 39T steel spur gear, but does not publish a complete current specification set for gear pitch/module, outside diameter, face width, bore dimensions, pressure angle or universal fitment. GASHEAD RC does not invent those values.
GASHEAD RC NOTE
If GS088 is being replaced because of damaged teeth or unusual noise, inspect the mating pinion, bearings and shaft alignment at the same time. Steel gears are durable, but they will still fail quickly if the root cause is poor mesh or misalignment.
